Red spider mites are a garden pest that eat a wide range of plants, but azaleas and camellias are usually the ones they eat the most.
Once you have an infestation, you will see red spider mites all over the plant. It is important to get rid of the infestation before it does irreversible damage to the plant. Let’s look at how to get rid of red spider mites.
What is a Red Spider Mite?
The Southern red spider mite is the most common type. The European spider mite is usually only seen on apple trees. The Southern spider mite, on the other hand, affects a much wider range of plants.
A spider mite is an arachnid, like a spider, but it is smaller and only has one body segment, while a spider has two (whereas spiders have two).
Identifying Red Spider Mites
If you look closely, you will see that the dust really is moving and is actually spider mites. There may also be webs on the underside of the plant or on its branches.
You can’t easily tell what red spider mites look like with the naked eye, but a simple magnifying glass might help you see the details. The whole body of a red spider mite will be red.
There are also spider mites that are partly red, like the two-spotted spider mite. All of a crimson spider mite’s body will be red. If you drop some of them on a piece of white paper, it will be easier to tell the colours apart.
How to Control Red Spider
The best way to get rid of red spider mites is to use the animals that eat them naturally.
Most of the time, lacewings and ladybugs are used, but predatory mites can also be used. All of these spider mite killers can be bought at good garden supply stores or online.
You can also get rid of red spider mites with insecticides. Soaps and oils that kill bugs work best.
You should be careful about using pesticides, though, because they will also kill the red spider mites’ natural enemies, and the mites may just move from areas where pesticides were used to areas where they weren’t.
Also, make sure the plants get enough water. Since red spider mites like very dry places, the water will help keep them away.
