Top 12 Pots For Indoor Plants You Should Know – 4 Tips

When buying a planter, there’s more to think about than just how it looks. EJ Kaga, CEO of HomeGrown Garden, an online store that sells heritage seeds and gardening kits, says that the type of container you use for your indoor plants could affect how healthy or sick they are.

The plant and its health are affected by the material of the pot, its size, and how well it drains. You should also think about what kind of plant you are potting, since different plants need different conditions to grow.

“The best kind of planter will depend on what you’re growing, because what you’re growing will affect how warm the pot is and how well it drains water,” said Kaga.

Carmen DeVito, founder of Garden Cult, a garden and landscape design firm, says that once you’ve chosen the right pot for your indoor plant, you can play around with “colours and designs that harmonize with the colours and textures of the plant’s leaves.”

We’ve put together a list of the best indoor pots and planters based on what experts say.

Top-rated indoor pots and saucers

We talked to experts about how to choose indoor pots and planters, and based on their advice, we made a list of the best ones from companies like The Sill, Bloomscape, and Terrain.

Terrain Bergs Fluttered Pot + Saucer Set

The finish on these planters is ridged, and they are shaped like flutes. They are made of terracotta clay, which Terra says can get a weathered patina over time due to oxidation. A vinegar solution can be used to bring back the original surface.

If you want to keep plants in pots that don’t come with a saucer to collect water, DeVito says to buy small plates to put under the pots.

The hand-thrown saucer from Magnolia comes in either terracotta or white terracotta. It has a ring around the edge and a 4-inch base where you can put pots.

What to consider before buying an indoor pot

It’s easy to be swayed by how a pot looks when you’re shopping for one to put inside. But the experts we talked to said you should look at more than just how a pot looks.

For example, you should look at the material it’s made of and how it drains. They also said to think about what kind of container is best for the plant you are growing.

Material

Kaga says that you can use any kind of pot as long as you know how the pot’s material affects the plant it holds. However, factors such as how much water a pot absorbs or how much heat it holds may indicate that you need to change your watering technique.

Kaga thinks that plastic and ceramic are the best materials for indoor pots because they can be used in different ways.

Kaga says that plants that die if they get too much water do well in ceramic pots. Plants in ceramic pots are less likely to get root rot because the pot soaks up water. But plants in ceramic pots may need to be watered more often.

Plastic pots, on the other hand, are easier to clean and lighter than ceramic pots. They are also less likely to break. Soil in plastic pots dries out slowly, which is good for gardeners who forget to water but not so good for those who water too much.

Kaga says that clay, metal, fibreglass, wood, and stone are also good materials. He also said that terracotta pots are popular and trendy, but they can get too hot quickly because the material soaks up heat.

Size and repotting

“As a rule of thumb, choose a pot that is one size bigger than the plant.” “This is about 1 to 2 inches bigger on average,” Kaga said. He said to start with a smaller pot and move the plant to a bigger one as it grows.

This is also good advice for growing seedlings and cuttings from houseplants. DeVito says to put your plant in a new pot that is 1 to 2 inches bigger and deeper than the old one, or 3 to 4 inches wider and deeper for bigger plants.

Depending on how big they get, some plants can live in the same pot for years. DeVito says, however, that you might need to repot your plant if you see roots coming out of the bottom or if it dries out quickly after being watered.

Kaga also said to look out for mould or a smell, as well as a big mass of roots at the top of the pot. These are all signs that your plant needs to be replanted.

Drainage

When choosing indoor pots, drainage is one of the most important things to think about. DeVito says that a lack of drainage makes it possible for plants to stay wet for a long time. “Too much water is just as bad for plants as too little,” she says.

“All indoor pots should have holes in the bottom, even if you’re growing plants that like their soils to be wetter,” says Kaga. He said that the best way to grow plants inside is in pots with holes in the bottom for water to drain.

“The holes let water run out of the bottom of the pots when they are watered,” he said. “This keeps water from pooling in the bottom of the pot, which could lead to rotting plant roots or the growth of fungi and bacteria.”

You can still use planters that don’t have holes. These are called cachepots, and DeVito says that they may have a way for water to drain out. One way is to put a layer of gravel at the bottom of the cachepot and put the plant in a plastic pot with a hole in the bottom.

Then, put the plastic pot inside the cachepot on top of the gravel and cover it with Spanish moss or sheet moss.

Kaga also says that you can improve drainage by putting pebbles in the bottom of a pot and covering it with dirt. He says you should water less often if you use a cachepot.

DeVito says that if you choose a pot with drainage holes, you should put something under it to catch the water.

If you don’t do this, water could get on your floor and furniture. Some planters come with plates that match, or you can buy a saucer to put under the pot separately. DeVito says that the saucer should be 1 to 2 inches wider than the pot’s bottom.

Types of soil

There are different kinds of soil and growing media, like gravel or sand. Kaga says that what you grow in your indoor pots will determine which one you use. But you shouldn’t use garden soil or potting soil from outside.

“Don’t use dirt from your garden outside in the pots of your indoor plants,” he said. “This could make your containers more likely to get dangerous diseases and bugs.” Instead, you should buy potting soil or make it yourself.

Moisture retention is a very important thing to think about when buying indoor potting soil. Kaga says that the soil should retain the right amount of water between waterings while still letting the roots of plants breathe.

Kaga also said to look for healthy indoor potting soil so that “your plants can get enough food from the soil to grow and do well.”

Lastly, indoor potting soil should have structure so that plant roots can grow into it. It shouldn’t be too loose or too soft.
